Sunshine Medical Equipment: One Year Later

Sunshine Medical Equipment: One Year Later

In a time where small businesses are in positions where they are forced to close or raise prices on their established customer base, we figure on the one-year anniversary of our opening that it’s a good time to reflect on our journey so far and what lies ahead.

I’m proud to say that our store is well stocked, our prices are still competitive with big box stores, and our checkout is so quick that customers are frequently impressed. With a mission to make things as easy as possible in the position we’re in, it’s the little things we can accomplish on a daily basis that should make us proud. Our checkout is so easy that it has even gotten the attention of folks not only outside of La Mirada, but we get orders from other states, even so far as Eastern USA. We are so thankful that we reside close to not only homes and facilities, but also across the street from a UPS. This allows orders to be shipped nearly same day on a regular basis.

We have noticed as well that in the rare times that we don’t have a specific item in stock that our ordering time has lessened. It’s not as good before 2020, but it’s showing healthy progress. Similarly, I am happy to announce that our pricing has remained relatively the same or even less in recent months while still having inventory on hand to demonstrate and present our products. That is after all what differentiates us from options like Amazon, who for certain items have it on sale for our cost. The ability to physically show what the items look like out of the box, answer questions right then at there on the sales floor, and even assemble it before loading into vehicles is what sets us apart.

So, what is next for Sunshine Medical Equipment? We have recently passed our HMDR (Home Medical Device Retail) inspection, and we have gotten our license from the Department of Public Health, a faction of the FDA. This license, used as the titular blog image, is necessary to even begin the process of signing up with insurance companies, so that customers can have the opportunity to use their insurance to pay for items instead of out-of-pocket costs.

Now, I’m not going to lie, using your insurance will take longer than paying for items outright, as we must pass a lot of paperwork between us, the doctors, and sometimes even the insurance company themselves, like with Medicare Authorizations for certain items. I tell my customers in the store that there are Pros and Cons to everything. In this instance, the PRO is having to not outright pay for items, or to pay comparatively small upgrade fees, with the CON being that it takes longer. Thankfully, we brought in the wonderful Suzanna into the fold. She is an insurance and paperwork wizard, knows the process inside and out, and can answer your questions regarding this process thoroughly.

With the holidays coming up, we have already begun the process of applying through different insurances and are well underway with a few of them. We will announce which ones are completed as they come along, and we do suspect in 2023 that we will have a veritable repertoire of accepted insurances. We know we missed the holiday specific for this, but we wanted to thank every customer, referral, caretaker  and family that reach out to us to see if we could make their tomorrows just a little bit brighter. We hope your holidays are happy and that your Christmases are merry.
